What Is BMR? Basal Metabolic Rate Formula and Meaning
Basal metabolic rate, or BMR, is the energy your body uses under strict resting conditions to keep breathing, circulating blood, regulating temperature, and running its organs.
It is expressed in calories per day, but BMR is not the maximum number of calories you should eat, and it is not your total daily calorie burn.
What does your basal metabolism power?
Even if you stayed in bed all day, your body would still be working. The brain, liver, heart, kidneys, breathing muscles, cellular repair, and temperature regulation all require energy.
BMR is usually the largest component of daily energy expenditure. A full day also includes:
- Walking, standing, chores, fidgeting, and other non-exercise activity
- Planned exercise and training
- Energy used to digest and absorb food
- Changes related to temperature, illness, growth, and physiological adaptation
All of those components together form total daily energy expenditure, commonly abbreviated TDEE.
How do you calculate BMR?
A laboratory can estimate resting energy expenditure with indirect calorimetry. Most apps and online calculators use an equation based on height, weight, age, and sex.
One widely used equation is Mifflin–St Jeor:
Men: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5
Women: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161
For a 30-year-old woman who is 165 cm tall and weighs 60 kg:
10 × 60 + 6.25 × 165 − 5 × 30 − 161 ≈ 1,320 calories/day
The equation estimates that her body would use roughly 1,320 calories per day under basal conditions. It does not mean 1,320 calories is her recommended daily intake.
Prediction equations are built from groups. Muscle mass, genetics, health, hormones, medication, and the measurement environment can make an individual’s true resting expenditure different.
What is a normal BMR?
There is no one normal BMR for all adults.
A small adult and a tall, muscular adult can naturally differ by hundreds of calories per day. BMR is influenced by:
- Body size and weight
- Fat-free mass, including muscle and organs
- Age
- Sex-related physiology and hormonal status
- Genetics
- Fever, thyroid conditions, and other health factors
- Long-term energy intake and weight change
If a calculator says your BMR is 1,300, that number alone cannot show that your metabolism is “slow” or damaged. First ask whether it was measured or predicted, then compare it with your body size and health context.
BMR vs. RMR vs. TDEE

Consumer devices often use BMR and RMR loosely or interchangeably. That usually matters less than recognizing that either resting estimate is different from your full daily expenditure.
Should you eat the same number of calories as your BMR?
Not as a general rule. Ordinary life uses energy beyond basal metabolism, so total needs are usually higher than BMR.
Multiplying BMR by an activity factor is a common way to estimate TDEE, but activity categories are themselves rough. A long-term estimate is refined by actual weight trends, activity, training, hunger, recovery, and medical context.
Anyone who is pregnant, living with a chronic condition, recovering from an eating disorder, or managing complex nutritional needs should seek individualized advice from a qualified professional.
Can dieting “damage” your metabolism?
Metabolism does not usually break like a switch. Long-term energy restriction and weight loss can, however, lower energy expenditure through several mechanisms:
- A smaller body costs less energy to maintain and move.
- Unconscious movement and daily activity may decrease.
- Adaptive thermogenesis can reduce expenditure beyond what size change predicts.
- Loss of lean mass may lower resting needs further.
This is not proof of permanent metabolic damage, and one high-calorie meal does not “reset” it. A more useful approach is to avoid prolonged extreme restriction, preserve muscle through resistance training and adequate nutrition, stay active, and choose a plan you can sustain.
Can you increase your BMR?
No food, supplement, or trick will permanently and dramatically raise basal metabolism. The lasting levers are less exciting but more useful.
Maintain or build muscle
Muscle uses energy at rest, although gaining a few pounds of it will not double daily calorie burn. Strength training also supports function, bone health, and long-term weight management—benefits that matter beyond calories.
Increase total daily movement
Walking, standing, commuting, chores, and recreational activity can meaningfully affect TDEE. They primarily increase total expenditure, not the number printed as BMR.
Prioritize sleep and recovery
Poor sleep does not simply set BMR to a single lower value, but it can affect appetite, training performance, activity, food choices, and weight management.
Investigate persistent symptoms
Talk to a clinician if you have significant cold intolerance, fatigue, palpitations, unexplained weight change, or other ongoing symptoms. Thyroid and other health conditions require medical evaluation, not a metabolism hack.
Why does BMR decrease after weight loss?
A smaller body generally needs less energy for maintenance, and body weight is lower in the prediction equation. If lean mass was also lost, the reduction may be larger.
A lower estimate after weight loss does not mean the effort failed. It means energy needs can change as the body changes. Comparing old and new BMR numbers without considering weight, muscle, and activity invites unnecessary worry.
Frequently asked questions
Is a high BMR better than a low BMR?
Not by itself. Taller and larger people tend to have higher BMRs. The number cannot be ranked fairly without body size and health context.
Does a low BMR make you gain weight?
Body-weight change reflects long-term energy balance within a much larger biological, behavioral, social, and environmental system. A low calculator estimate is not destiny.
Do coffee and spicy food boost metabolism?
Some compounds can modestly and temporarily affect energy expenditure. The effect is not a substitute for overall nutrition, movement, sleep, and a sustainable routine.
Is the BMR on a smart scale accurate?
Most smart scales calculate it from your profile and estimated body composition. They do not directly measure gas exchange or heat production, so small changes should not be treated as measured metabolic shifts.
What is metabolic age?
It is usually a brand-specific comparison between your estimated BMR or body composition and averages for different age groups. It is not a medical measure of biological age.
Metabolism is not a character trait
“Bad metabolism” is often used like a personal failing. Human energy balance is far more complicated than that.
